Abstract

The subjects of cultural differences and analysis of culture-architecture relationship have gained great attention in the recent years. Mazumdar & Mazumdar (1994) developed a four step model which forms socio-physical model of relationships between culture and architecture through this approach. This model shows the linkages between architectural values, artifacts, social values and norms which were chosen or designed by culture. Both physical and cultural factors must be considered while analyzing and categorizing the houses. Because house forms are not effected by only a single factor or physical factors, but also effected by all the cultural factors. The relationships between architecture, culture and social values are examined and they are tried to be understood in Edirne houses where different ethnic and cultural groups lived, using Mazumdar & Mazumdar’s model in this case study.
