ABSTRACT

Given that a number of activities are to be performed a number of products are to be produced and that the group of activities or products draw on a common bank of resources: if the amount of resources or the ways in which thay may be used are restricted, it may be impossible to perform each single activity or produce each single product in the most efficient way. This is allocation problem and operations research allocation techniques determine ways of allocating resources to activities or products so that some measure of overall efficiency is optimized. In operations research work, mathematical programming is the most powerful method of finding such solutions, and the most commonly used type of mathematical programming is linear programming.
